My House Was Better Than That

Filed under: Travel Tips — Tags: — admin @ 7:39 pm

Oh my God! I still can’t believe how bad the hotels where I stayed were. I had made reservations online and I was pretty sure they were good. However, when I arrived to my first destination, I have to say it was midnight, and went straight to the hotel I discovered, to my surprise, that my house looked better than my room. The problem was not the decoration because I can live with old fashioned wallpaper and horrible carpets; the main problem was the size of the room, which was smaller than a train station toilet. I was not going to stay long there so I just decided to cope with it. When I got to the second city in my itinerary, I was also disappointed because the hotel was even worse than the previous one. By that time, I was not in the mood to put up with an expensive pigpen so I called reception and asked them to give me a better room or else I’d leave without paying. That really worked and I could spend the rest of my trip in a decent room.

Word of Warning

Filed under: Travel Tips — Tags: — admin @ 7:13 pm

Word of warning: Do not use an overseas shipping company that does not offer port-to-door service at the arrival port.

I shipped the entire contents of my home overseas. We are talking about 30 years worth of accumulated memories. I believed that there would not be any problems because I used a company that was recommended by a business service.

Boy was I wrong.

My belongings arrived, three weeks after they were scheduled. Upon arrival, it was determined that the contents were not properly listed on the Customs forms and the shipment would be delayed for a few days. When it was finally released I was informed that I would have to find a moving company to move the product from the port because the shipper did not provide that service. I was given the name of a local company, who charged half up front, and stated my belongings would arrive the next day. That was the last I seen of them, or my stuff.

My friend told me that she wished I would have used NY International Shipping to move my stuff. I wish I had too.

As the Easter festive season nears, a lot of people will be traveling. Some will be traveling in their country while others will travel outside their country. Those traveling outside their country will be required to have passports. Without them then they will not be allowed to leave their country and enter another. If you don’t have a passport make sure that you apply for it. Your embassy is the one in possession of passport forms. Visit the embassy in person or you can get the application forms from their website. Fill the form with the information that you are asked for then submit it. Within a period of five weeks for the normal application process you will get your passport. However if your case is urgent and needs a passport in forty eight hours, you will request for the express processing. This type of processing is costly but you will get the document within the time frame that you specified in the form. Keep checking the expiry date of the document so that you can renew it. If it gets lost then you will have to replace it.

Wacky Places to Stay on Holiday

Going on holiday should be a special occasion. Especially in this time of financial hardship, it should be memorable, and an experience you really enjoy. So as well as choosing a destination you like and enjoying the activities and local culture, why not stay in an unusual hotel as well. Places to stay don’t necessarily have to be expensive, in fact some of the cheapest hotels are the best. Below is a quick list of some of the most inventive and unusual hotels around the world:

Das Park Hotel, Linz

This ‘pay-as-you-go’ hotel concept is an interesting one. The rooms are reserved then the extras are charged individually, such as showers, bars, activities etc, so you can tailor your holiday budget to suit. Not only that, but the rooms are constructed from large concrete pipe sections, making strange tubular rooms. They are made quite homely through some innovative design and furnishings, and make a very futuristic looking compound overall.

The Capsule Hotel, Japan

So successful was this idea of horizontal stacked bunk ‘capsule’ hotels that they have now made their way all across the world, however this one in Japan is the original. Opened in the late 1990′s it is still very popular today, due to the location in central Tokyo, reasonable prices and quick availability.

The Shady Dell, Arizona

Why not sample some real Americana whilst in the beautiful surroundings of Arizona. The Shady Dell is a hotel resort with a difference, in that all of the rooms are Airstream trailers. These old American road icons have found a home here and have been lovingly converted into comfortable rooms with all the amenities needed, the perfect addition to a trip across the states.

The Gamirasu Cave Hotel, Turkey

If you want a bit of history with your wacky weekend break, try this cave hotel just outside Cappadocia in Turkey. Situated in a 1000 year old monastery carved into the living rock it offers modern features whilst keeping the ancient feel.
